A very welcome change for cancer survivors in Ireland
The passing of Ireland’s new “Right to be Forgotten” legislation is a significant step forward for people who have recovered from cancer.
For many years, cancer survivors often faced difficulties obtaining mortgage protection insurance, even when treatment had ended successfully many years earlier. This new law helps address that issue.
Under the new legislation, people who have completed cancer treatment and have been in remission for five years will no longer have to disclose certain cancer-related medical history when applying for eligible mortgage protection insurance. The life cover limit will also increase to €650,000.
This applies to mortgage protection taken out on a person’s principal private residence and not investment or rental properties.
As a Financial Adviser, I’ve seen first-hand how important mortgage protection is in helping families secure their home and financial future. This change recognises that a cancer diagnosis should not continue to create unnecessary financial barriers years after recovery.
If you’ve previously been declined, postponed, charged higher premiums, or struggled to obtain mortgage protection following a cancer diagnosis, it may be worth revisiting your options.
Well done to the Irish Cancer Society, patient advocates and all the others who campaigned for this important change.

Note – Mortgage Protection Insurance is a decreasing term life insurance policy designed to repay the outstanding balance of a home loan in the event of death.
